“The Dominican Story begins with Dominic and his first companions…
This story, often retold and sometimes rewritten is in itself a particular
way in which the thread of an already older story, that of Jesus of Nazareth,
is taken up and continued in a new manner… Dominican spirituality
is only valid in so far as it takes up the story of Jesus and brings
it up to date in its own way.”

The Congregation of Dominican Sisters of Eastern Australia and the Solomon
Islands welcomes those who are interested in the Dominican charism.
“Keep in mind that each of you has your own vineyard,
but this is joined to your neighbours’ vineyards without any
dividing lines, so that you cannot do good or evil for yourself without
doing the same for your neighbours.”

‘The Order was called into being by Dominic’s attentiveness
to the needs of the people in the changing world of the 13th Century.
We, like Dominic - and like the Buddhist monk and the Hindu sanyyasi
- are called to take to the road again, to reclaim our mendicant heritage,
to realize that we are all beggars before the truth which only waits
to surprise us.’
Letter to the Order by Carlos Azpiroz Costa OP, May 2003
‘We pray to be able to trust in that Spirit who maps our journey
for us, for we, as Church and as Order, have ourselves been given to
the spirit. It is the spirit, present in every culture and every religion
- long before Christianity arrived - that makes dialogue both possible
and necessary. We pray for the trust of our father, Dominic, who even
though he could not foresee the outcome, knew that he was doing what
God wanted.”
Statement, Sound the Gong, Conference on Interfaith Dialogue:
2001,
ed Vincente G Cajilig OP, Manila, University of Santo Tomas,
2002, p.6
‘We have been called to be preachers, to be prophets. To be a
prophet does not mean to know or foretell the future, having it clear,
and offering security. God calls the prophets to read history in the
light of his Word; to read the Word feeling the pulse of what is happening.”
Letter to the Order by Carlos Azpiroz Costa OP, May 2003

Prayer
We are disciples of Dominic who -
was open to God’s Word and God’s Spirit,
sought the Truth,
was a prophet of the reign of God,
was a lover of creation and culture,
respected the dignity of all,
committed himself with wisdom and vitality,
to freedom, justice and peace.
We pray to our good and gracious God
as people who
cherish
the memories that are ours.
We claim our history as a sacred gift
given us by Dominic and his
followers.
Strengthen your truth in us,
inspire us through Your Word.
Be for us all that we need.
Be God for us.
Amen.
