Parliament House Canberra
ACT 2600
(Date)...2009
Dear ........................................
Climate change is occurring so rapidly that it is very important to reduce emissions as soon as possible, by an amount that is both feasible and enforceable.
The current proposed legislation is deeply flawed. We hope your party can work well to change it.
- It seems that the large industries have succeeded in watering down targets – from 25% as soon as possible, to a minimum of 5% by 2020. This is too little too late.
- Why are more than 70% of the permits being given free to large industries? Why can’t permits be sold to big businesses, even for a low rate ?
- Why do these then become permits industries can ‘sell’ , so tax-payers may have to buy them back for the good of the environment?
- Where are clear penalties for non compliance? How easy will it be for large businesses to avoid them?
- Isn’t there a more effective way of rewarding those industries that decrease emissions and penalising those that don’t?
- Why can’t there be a separate market for permits for households and for big business?
We understand that as households reduce their output, their permits could be ‘bought’ by big polluters, so that there is no net gain for the environment.
- Why does this legislation not include more measures to encourage investment in ‘clean energy’?
We do not believe this proposed legislation is best for Australia and the environment of our planet.
We hope your party can succeed in helping to refocus all Parliamentarians on a common task : a sustainable future for the planet.
Yours sincerely
