Sr Mary Conrad Earl

died 30 January 2008

in Newcastle NSW

102 years of age

Sr Mary Conrad (Margaret Edna) was born on 10 December 1905 at Crows Nest, New South Wales. Her parents were Henry Norbert and Margaret (nee Carmody). She was the third of five children. Sr Mary Conrad was educated by the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of St Joseph. She completed a secretarial course and worked in a variety of positions in Sydney.

From 1953-1955 she went to the Catholic Missions at Sideia in PNG as a lay missionary at the request of her brother Fr Norbert Earl MSC of whom she was so proud. Two of her sisters, Sr Mary Dennis and Sr Mary Norberta, were Sisters of St Joseph.

In 1959 at the age of fifty-three, Sr M Conrad entered the Dominican Novitiate "Berith Park" Wahroonga. She contributed, after novitiate, to the household and community apostolate, then was called to Canberra where she was secretary to Mother Prioress General, and later to the Provincial and her Council at Rosary Convent, Waratah.

Sr Mary Conrad was a gentle, humble and loving presence among the Dominican Sisters, and at 102 lived longer than any other Sister since our foundation in Australia in 1867. She died peacefully on 30 January 2008.
